The New Religious Centre

Kareas, Greece

2006

This project is by Onoffice architects when I was responsible for the synodical centre with its library, housing spaces and learning complex

The Kareas district has gone through various transformations throughout history. It is an area that resides at the roots of mount Hymettos, which is a mountain range in the Athens area, East Central Greece.

In 2006, a proposal was put forward to build a new religious centre for the Greek Orthodox Church at this location which remains today one of Athens’s most privileged locations.

The proposal consisted of the main building with the priest ‘throne and offices, a library, an exhibition area and a museum. In addition, the complex included a monastery with a church and service building for the residing monks and visitors.
